Five people, including a 14-year-old child, were wounded in the Ukrainian capital, where damage to energy facilities disrupted heating and water supplies, its mayor says.

Russian attacks hit energy facilities near Kiev, damage key bridge

Russian attacks have damaged energy facilities near Kiev and a key bridge in the Ukrainian capital, disrupting essential services and wounding five people, including a 14-year-old child.

“As a result of an overnight enemy attack, energy facilities in the Kiev and Zhytomyr regions were damaged. The situation with the capital’s energy supply is extremely difficult,” Mayor Vitaly Klitschko wrote on Telegram on Saturday.

Damage to the facilities has affected the operation of heating and water supply systems in the city, he said.

In a separate message, Klitschko said the Northern Bridge, which connects the eastern and western parts of Kiev across the Dnipro River, was also damaged. Specialists were assessing the extent of the damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Friday of further attacks on the country’s energy sector and civilian infrastructure.

Dispute over winter preparations

The latest strikes come amid a dispute between Zelenskyy and Klitschko over the capital’s preparations for winter.

Zelenskyy said on Friday that Kiev faced the country’s worst energy situation, blaming both Russian attacks and city officials’ failure to implement preparations for the heating season.

“In fact, these are the consequences of the failure to implement decisions at the city level on preparations for the heating season, as well as of this Russian operation against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” he wrote on X.

Klitschko rejected the criticism, accusing the central government of delaying approval of the city’s resilience plan and obstructing efforts to prepare the capital. He described Zelenskyy’s criticism as “constant manipulations”.

The city of more than three million people has faced prolonged emergency power cuts, repeated water outages, and disruptions to metro services as temperatures approach freezing.
