Moscow orders embassy official to leave within two weeks

Russia Expels British Diplomat Over Espionage Claims

Russia has expelled a British diplomat, accusing him of engaging in intelligence-related activities.

The official, Jance Gerardus, who served as second secretary at the embassy in Moscow, has had his accreditation revoked and has been ordered to leave the country within two weeks.

According to Russia’s security agency, the Federal Security Service, the diplomat allegedly provided false information when entering the country and later attempted to gather sensitive data through informal meetings with Russian economic experts.

Authorities claim these actions posed a threat to national security, describing them as intelligence and “subversive” activities.

In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Danae Dholakia, the UK’s acting chargé d’affaires, to formally protest the situation and deliver the expulsion notice.

This incident adds to ongoing diplomatic tensions between Russia and the United Kingdom, where such expulsions are often part of broader geopolitical disputes.
