Visit highlights poverty gap and calls for fair governance
Pope Leo XIV called on Equatorial Guinea to prioritize law, justice, and fairness during a visit to the capital, Malabo.
He urged the country’s leaders to rethink their development path and strengthen their role globally by respecting justice and reducing inequality. The Pope warned that a growing gap between a wealthy elite and ordinary citizens is fueling social injustice and exclusion.
Despite being rich in oil, Equatorial Guinea faces widespread poverty, with critics long accusing the government of corruption and unequal distribution of wealth.
During the visit, the Pope met President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has ruled the country for decades, along with senior officials.
The trip reflects a delicate balance: supporting the country’s large Catholic population while also raising concerns about governance, human rights, and economic inequality.
Crowds gathered to see the Pope, showing a mix of hope and curiosity as he continued the final leg of his African tour, which will also take him to other cities across the country.
