Talks intensify as tensions threaten shipping through the Strait of Hormuz

Oman Pushes for Diplomacy to Keep Key Oil Route Open

Oman is calling for urgent diplomacy to protect global shipping routes after rising tensions linked to US and Israeli strikes on Iran. The focus is on the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage where a large share of the world’s oil and gas travels.

Oman’s foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, said he had “good” discussions with Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing the shared responsibility of countries in the region to keep sea routes safe and open.

He highlighted the humanitarian need to free detained sailors and stressed that “much diplomacy is required” to find lasting solutions and avoid further disruption.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are moving quickly across several countries. Araghchi traveled between Muscat, Islamabad, and Moscow to hold talks aimed at reviving negotiations between Iran and the United States.

Previous talks between Iran and the US failed to reach a deal, despite a temporary ceasefire brokered by Pakistan earlier in April. Now, both sides are still divided over key issues, including:

  • Control and security of the Strait of Hormuz

  • US restrictions on Iranian ports

  • Iran’s nuclear program and enriched uranium

Oman’s role highlights growing regional efforts to prevent escalation and protect global trade. Any disruption in the Strait could have major effects on energy prices and supply chains worldwide.
