Security forces mobilize amid intelligence warnings targeting Abuja airport and detention facilities.
Security agencies in Nigeria have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports of a potential terrorist attack targeting critical infrastructure in Abuja and neighboring regions.
An internal memo indicates that suspected militants are planning coordinated assaults on strategic sites, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, a prison facility in the capital, and a military detention center in Niger State. The reported objective is to free detained fighters and inflict significant damage on aviation infrastructure.
Authorities believe the plan may mirror previous attacks in the region, including a January assault on a military base in Niamey, suggesting an attempt to replicate similar tactics within Nigeria. The memo also highlights concerns over patterns linking recent attacks on aviation facilities in neighboring countries.
Nigeria has previously experienced such incidents. In 2022, an attack on a prison in Abuja resulted in the escape of hundreds of inmates, including members of extremist groups.
The threat is reportedly linked to Boko Haram and affiliated networks, which remain active despite ongoing military operations. Security forces, including military and paramilitary units, have intensified surveillance and preparedness measures to prevent any potential attack.
As Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria continues to face a complex security landscape, particularly in its northern regions, where terrorism, armed groups, and kidnapping for ransom remain persistent challenges.
