Min Aung Hlaing Nominated as Vice-President

Myanmar Junta Leader Eyes Civilian Presidency

Myanmar’s coup leader Min Aung Hlaing has been nominated as a vice-presidential candidate, a move widely seen as paving the way for him to become president and continue his rule under civilian cover. He has led the country since the 2021 coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s government.

After five years of military rule, Hlaing oversaw tightly controlled elections earlier this year that barred protest and criticism, delivering a sweeping win for pro-military parties. Democracy watchdogs warn the new government will remain a proxy of the military, which has dominated Myanmar for most of its post-independence history.

Three vice-presidents will be chosen, with one elected president in a parliament-wide vote. If successful, Hlaing would shift from military commander to civilian head of state, consolidating his grip on power.
