The lawsuit by a board member followed damning audit that showed how local staff squandered funds meant for a $15 million plan for a girls academy.

Wrongful-termination case by ex-president’s sister thrown out after decade-long delay.

The Malawi High Court has dismissed a longstanding wrongful‑termination case against US pop star Madonna, filed by Anjimire Oponyo, sister of former president Joyce Banda.

Oponyo, who had been removed in 2011 from the board of Madonna’s charity Raising Malawi amid allegations of financial mismanagement, sought damages claiming her dismissal was wrongful. Audits and media reports had accused local staff of misusing funds intended for a $15 million girls’ academy in Lilongwe on luxury items.

Judge Allan Hans Muhome ruled the application “frivolous, vexatious and an abuse of the process of the court,” citing Oponyo’s decade-long delay in pursuing the matter and technical defects in her filings.

Following the academy’s collapse, the Malawian government criticized Madonna, accusing her of exaggerating her philanthropy and seeking special treatment. Madonna has since focused her efforts on community schools and the Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery, the country’s first specialised pediatric hospital.
