Liverpool's Istanbul woes continue as Fenerbahce hand Reds another defeat

Liverpool’s struggles in Istanbul continued on Wednesday as Fenerbahce came from behind twice to claim a dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory, extending the English side’s losing streak on Turkish soil to four consecutive away matches.

The defeat at Istanbul’s Chobani Stadium added another chapter to Liverpool’s increasingly difficult relationship with Turkish football, following previous setbacks against Galatasaray and Besiktas.

Trey Nyoni gave Liverpool the lead in the 25th minute, but Mason Greenwood equalised four minutes later.

Alexander Isak restored the visitors’ advantage in the 69th minute before Archie Brown levelled the score again.

Vedat Muriqi then completed Fenerbahce’s comeback with the winner in the 79th minute.

Four straight defeats on Turkish soil

Liverpool’s latest setback followed three consecutive 1-0 away defeats against Turkish opposition.

The run began with a loss to Besiktas in February 2015, before Galatasaray beat the Reds by the same score in Istanbul in September 2025 and again in March 2026.

Fenerbahce’s 3-2 victory has now made it four successive away defeats in Türkiye.

The record is particularly striking given Liverpool’s European pedigree.

Fenerbahce end 18-year Champions League wait

While Liverpool endured another disappointing night in Istanbul, Fenerbahce celebrated a landmark victory.

The Turkish side secured their first Champions League win since April 2 2008, when they defeated Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

The comeback lifted Fenerbahce to five points from four matches in the league phase, while Liverpool suffered their first defeat of this season’s European campaign.

For Liverpool, however, the result brought another reminder that trips to Istanbul have become a particularly difficult challenge in European competition.
