City rebuilds amid massive destruction and humanitarian crisis

Khartoum Struggles to Heal After Devastating Conflict

After years of brutal fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, Khartoum is slowly coming back to life. Major landmarks like the Corinthia Hotel remain heavily damaged, and once-busy areas such as the central market stand deserted. Although the army regained control of the capital in 2025, recovery has been slow, with electricity, water, and infrastructure only gradually returning. Millions of displaced residents are now returning home, but daily life is marked by shortages and hardship. The human toll is staggering: at least 59,000 people have been killed, and millions more forced to flee, creating what the UN calls one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Khartoum is rebuilding, but the scars of war remain everywhere.
