Suspects divided into victims, overstayers, and organizers

Kampala Launches Major Sweep on Illegal Migration

Uganda has detained more than 230 foreigners in a major operation targeting illegal migration, with officials saying the crackdown is connected to human trafficking and online scam activities.

The arrests took place in different areas, including the capital Kampala, where authorities discovered a large group of foreigners living in a tightly controlled residential complex. People from several countries—including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and others—were found inside, many without proper documents.

Officials say some individuals may have been victims of trafficking, lured to Uganda with false job promises. Others are suspected of being involved in cyber scams or other illegal activities. Those detained are now being questioned and divided into three groups: possible victims, suspected organizers, and people who simply overstayed their visas.

According to the government, victims and minor offenders will be assisted in returning to their home countries, while those believed to be behind trafficking operations could face serious criminal charges and possible deportation.

Despite this crackdown, Uganda remains known for welcoming foreigners and refugees, especially from neighboring countries like Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and South Sudan.

Overall, the operation highlights growing concerns about organized crime networks exploiting migration systems, while also raising questions about protection for vulnerable migrants.
