A prolonged shutdown leaves millions cut off from the global web

Iran’s Internet Goes Dark for Over 1,000 Hours

A group called NetBlocks reports that Iran has now been without normal internet access for more than 1,000 hours—that’s over 40 days.

According to their data, internet activity across the country dropped sharply in early March to almost zero (about 1%) and has stayed at that extremely low level ever since. This means most people can’t access the global internet and are instead limited to restricted local networks.

The shutdown reportedly started on February 28, around the same time as military strikes involving the U.S. and Israel. These attacks are said to have caused thousands of deaths, including Ali Khamenei.

Because of how long it has lasted, this blackout is now considered one of the longest nationwide internet shutdowns ever recorded. It has made communication, access to information, and daily online activities very difficult for people across the country.
