Calls grow for international action as concerns over rights violations increase
Hamas issued a statement on Palestinian Prisoners' Day, expressing serious concern about the situation of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
According to the statement, around 9,500 Palestinians—including women and children—are currently detained by Israel. It also claimed that about 1,500 people from Gaza Strip have been held in undisclosed detention centers since October 2023.
Hamas alleged that detainees are being denied basic rights and subjected to harsh treatment, including physical and psychological abuse, with some reportedly dying in custody. The group strongly criticized a recently approved law by the Israeli parliament that allows the death penalty for certain Palestinian prisoners, calling it a violation of international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The statement urged the United Nations Human Rights Council and other international organizations to investigate prison conditions, send inspection teams, and pressure Israel to release detainees.
Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, first established in 1974, is marked each year with events supporting those held in Israeli prisons and raising awareness about their conditions.
