New leadership announced as security tensions persist in the world’s youngest nation.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan will now be led by Major General Junhui Wu of China following his appointment by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Wu succeeds Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian and is expected to oversee peacekeeping operations amid continued instability in the country.
South Sudan gained independence in 2011 but was plunged into civil war two years later after a political dispute between President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar.
Although a power-sharing agreement was signed in 2018, violence and political tensions continue to threaten the fragile peace process.
