Major opposition groups lose legal status under government decree
Guinea has dissolved 40 political parties for failing to comply with legal requirements, according to a decree broadcast on national television on Friday evening. The decision takes immediate effect.
Among the affected groups are several prominent parties, including the Union des Forces Democratiques de Guinee (UFDG) led by former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, the Rassemblement du Peuple de Guinee - Arc-en-ciel (RPG Arc-en-ciel) founded by former President Alpha Conde, and the Union des Forces Republicaines (UFR) headed by former Prime Minister Sidya Toure.
The decree was issued by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, which said the move results in the immediate loss of legal personality and juridical status for the dissolved parties.
According to the decree, all political activities conducted under the names of the banned parties are now prohibited across Guinea and in diplomatic missions abroad. Authorities will also seal party headquarters and local branches, while their assets will be seized and managed by a liquidator until they are redistributed.
The decision comes as Guinea prepares for legislative and municipal elections scheduled for May 24, 2026, a vote expected to shape the country’s political landscape.
