Heavy rains leave roads impassable, commuters stranded
Residents and motorists in Syokimau, Machakos County, are facing severe disruption after heavy rains triggered flooding that left roads nearly impassable. Vehicles have been stranded for hours, with commuters unable to reach workplaces and daily life brought to a halt. Local resident Abdulrahim Weku described the situation as “another wasted day” with no safe passage out of homes. Taxi driver Johnson Kaburi said he lost income after being stuck in traffic since early morning, making only two trips. The flooding highlights the economic toll of extreme weather, which has already claimed more than 80 lives in Nairobi and other regions. Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying rainfall and drought cycles in East Africa, underscoring the urgent need for improved drainage and flood‑management systems.
