World Athletics decision ends uncertainty as Nigeria’s federation calls for renewed support for the sprinter.

Favour Ofili Cleared to Represent Nigeria After Nationality Switch Rejected

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has confirmed that Favour Ofili will continue to represent Nigeria after her request to change sporting nationality was rejected by World Athletics.

The 23-year-old sprinter’s application was declined over concerns that such transfers could undermine the integrity of international competition. According to the AFN, her case was reviewed alongside several others, with the governing body ultimately deciding against approving the switch despite acknowledging her individual circumstances.

Reacting to the decision, AFN President Tonobok Okowa called for unity and support around the athlete, emphasizing the need to provide a better environment for her development.

Ofili had sought to compete under a different flag following frustrations with administrative shortcomings in Nigeria’s athletics system. She was among athletes who missed the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games due to compliance issues and later faced exclusion from the 100m event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games over administrative errors, though she still finished sixth in the 200m final.

The federation described her return as an opportunity to rebuild trust and strengthen relations with athletes ahead of future competitions.

As Nigeria looks to upcoming international events, Ofili’s confirmed eligibility is seen as a boost for the country’s sprinting prospects.
