Energy costs drive decline, March rebound expected
Producer prices in the eurozone fell in February, with Eurostat reporting a 0.7% monthly drop in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU. The decline was driven largely by a 2.4% fall in energy prices, while durable consumer goods (+0.2%), intermediate goods (+0.3%), and capital goods (+0.3%) all posted modest increases.
The steepest monthly decreases were recorded in Spain (-3.1%), Ireland (-2.6%), and Portugal (-1.8%), while the largest increases came from Croatia (+3.8%), Finland (+2.7%), and Lithuania (+1.8%).
On a yearly basis, industrial producer prices fell 3% in the euro area and 2.7% in the EU. Analysts warn that energy-driven pressures could reverse the trend in March, especially as global supply disruptions continue to ripple through markets.
