The death toll from severe flooding in Kenya has risen to 42 since Friday after heavy rains triggered flash floods across several regions, police said on Sunday.
At least 42 people have died after severe flooding struck Kenya following heavy rains that began on Friday. The worst damage occurred in the capital, Nairobi, where floodwaters rushed through low-lying neighborhoods and informal settlements, submerging homes and sweeping away vehicles as rivers overflowed.
Police reported that 26 of the deaths happened in Nairobi, while other fatalities were recorded in several counties across the country. Emergency teams are still conducting search and rescue operations as torrential rains continue to disrupt roads, transportation, and daily life in many towns.
Geoffrey Ruku, Kenya’s Public Service and Special Programmes Minister, confirmed the death toll and said the government has deployed emergency teams to help affected communities. He also announced that the government will cover hospital expenses for those injured and burial costs for families who lost loved ones.
The floods have damaged homes, businesses, and infrastructure, while rescue teams continue evacuating residents from flooded areas.
