Deadly School Shooting in Türkiye Leaves Nation in Mourning

A tragic school shooting in Kahramanmaraş has left Türkiye in shock, after an attack at a middle school resulted in multiple casualties. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed deep sorrow, offering condolences to the victims’ families and describing the incident as a devastating loss for the nation, particularly for its children.

According to Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftci, nine people were killed and 13 others injured, with several in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that the attack took place at Ayşer Çalık Secondary School, where the suspected perpetrator—an eighth-grade student—opened fire inside classrooms.

Governor Mükerrem Ünlüer stated that the motive behind the attack remains unknown. The student reportedly brought multiple firearms to the school and carried out the shooting before also dying during the incident. It is still unclear whether the suspect took his own life or was killed amid the chaos. Investigations suggest that the weapons may have belonged to his father, a former police officer.

Authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation involving prosecutors and education officials to determine the full circumstances of the attack.

The tragedy has also drawn international reactions. Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan expressed solidarity with Türkiye, while Aleksandar Vučić extended condolences and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
