Heavy rains trigger deadly flooding as extreme weather intensifies across East Africa.

Deadly Floods Claim 30 Lives in Southern Ethiopia

At least 30 people have died in severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall in the Gamo area of southern Ethiopia, according to local authorities.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Gamo zone administration said the fatalities occurred mainly in the Degama areas, where intense rainfall triggered flooding that devastated several communities.

The tragedy comes as East Africa faces widespread flooding following days of torrential rains. In neighbouring Kenya, dozens of people were killed after heavy downpours struck Nairobi and other regions last week.

Experts say such extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent across the region, with several studies documenting a rise in both intense rainfall and prolonged droughts in East Africa over the past two decades.

Scientists warn that human-driven climate change is contributing to the growing severity and frequency of extreme weather, including devastating floods and prolonged dry spells.
