New gas projects aim to secure supply amid global disruptions
Ding Xuexiang visited Turkmenistan to expand cooperation in energy and infrastructure, highlighting the growing importance of their partnership.
During the visit, Ding met with Serdar Berdimuhamedov, and both sides agreed to deepen cooperation, especially in natural gas, trade, and technology. Turkmenistan reaffirmed that China remains a top priority partner in its energy strategy.
A key highlight of the visit was the launch of the fourth phase of the Galkynysh Gas Field—the world’s second-largest gas field. The project, developed jointly by China National Petroleum Corporation and Turkmengaz, is expected to produce 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
Energy cooperation between the two countries has been strong for years, with Turkmenistan already exporting around 40 billion cubic meters of gas per year to China, much of it through pipelines crossing Central Asia.
This partnership is becoming even more critical as global energy supply faces disruptions. Ongoing tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz have reduced China’s energy imports, with natural gas imports dropping significantly in recent months.
As a result, Turkmenistan is seen as a key alternative supplier to help China maintain stable energy access and reduce reliance on more volatile regions.
Both countries emphasized the need to ensure global energy security, stabilize markets, and strengthen cooperation for long-term mutual benefit.
