The government says draft laws that will guide the establishment of future political parties and groups will be submitted soon.

Burkina Faso’s Traore dissolves all political parties for causing 'divisions'

The government of Burkina Faso has officially dissolved all political parties in the country and cancelled the laws that regulated them. The decision was approved by decree during a Council of Ministers meeting.

Political party activities had already been suspended under military leader Ibrahim Traoré, who took power after a 2022 coup. Now, the new decree goes further: all party assets must be handed over to the state.

Minister of Territorial Administration Emile Zerbo said authorities believe many parties had moved away from their original purpose. According to him, the large number of political parties created division among citizens and weakened national unity.

The government says it plans to introduce new draft laws that will define how future political parties and groups can be created. These proposals are expected to be submitted to the legislature soon.

Since the 2022 coup, the military government has introduced major changes. These include postponing elections that were meant to return the country to civilian rule and dissolving the independent electoral commission.
