Authorities tighten control on associations under new legal framework amid ongoing political transition.
Burkina Faso has ordered the dissolution of 118 associations and civil society organizations, in a move that reflects increasing government control over public and civic activities.
According to an official statement, all affected groups are now prohibited from operating across the country. The decision follows a law signed in July 2025 by transitional President Ibrahim Traoré, which introduced stricter regulations on the activities of non-governmental organizations, rights groups, and trade unions.
Territorial Administration Minister Emile Zerbo urged the leaders of the dissolved associations to comply with the new legal framework, warning that violations would result in penalties under existing laws.
Authorities have justified the measures on administrative grounds, though the decision is likely to raise concerns about civic space and freedom of association in the Sahel nation, which is currently navigating a complex political and security transition.
The move comes as Burkina Faso continues to face security challenges and governance restructuring, with analysts closely watching how these policies may impact civil society and public participation in the country.
