Lula calls for joint military production and strategic partnership between BRICS nations.

Brazil and South Africa Move Toward Stronger Defence Cooperation

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged South Africa to deepen defence cooperation, stressing that both countries must strengthen their military preparedness to safeguard their sovereignty and reduce dependence on foreign arms suppliers.

During talks in Brasília with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Lula emphasized the need to combine the two nations’ industrial and technological capabilities to develop joint defence production and reinforce strategic autonomy.

Ramaphosa acknowledged Brazil’s progress in defence and aviation technologies, noting that increased collaboration would allow both countries to learn from each other while expanding their strategic capacities.

The discussions come as defence ministers from both sides prepare to work on a cooperation agreement, aimed at strengthening military and technological ties between the two members of the BRICS bloc.

Lula also reiterated that South America presents itself as a region of peace, explaining that defence strategies should primarily serve as a deterrent to potential threats rather than a tool for aggression.
