The death toll from a landslide in southern Ethiopia has risen to 102, regional officials said on Thursday.

Deadly Landslide in Ethiopia Claims Over 100 Lives

At least 102 people have died after a landslide struck southern Ethiopia, according to regional officials.

The disaster occurred overnight on March 11 in Gacho Baba after several days of heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide in the highland area of Gamo Zone.

Authorities say recovery teams have so far retrieved 52 bodies from thick mud and debris, while many others remain missing. Emergency responders are continuing search and rescue operations in difficult conditions.

Tilahun Kebede, chief administrator of the South Ethiopia Region, said the government has launched a full emergency response, sending rescue teams, humanitarian aid, and support for survivors. He expressed condolences to affected families and promised continued assistance.

Local officials said the landslide has buried roads and damaged access to remote hillside communities. Heavy machinery is now being used to clear mud and debris so emergency teams can deliver food, medicine, and shelter supplies.

Highland areas of southern Ethiopia are especially vulnerable to landslides during the rainy season, when prolonged rainfall weakens soil and destabilizes slopes. Authorities warn that the death toll may still rise as rescue operations continue.
