Two-week truce sparks cautious optimism

Asia-Pacific Leaders Welcome US–Iran Ceasefire

Leaders across Asia and the Pacific have welcomed the newly announced two-week ceasefire between the US, Israel, and Iran, expressing hope it could pave the way for lasting peace in the Middle East.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called the truce a “positive development,” noting Iran’s 10-point plan received favorably by Washington. He stressed that stability must also extend to Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and Gaza, praising Pakistan’s role in diplomacy.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara described the ceasefire as a “positive move,” while Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned of the global economic impact of prolonged conflict and urged the truce be upheld. New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters echoed the cautious optimism, highlighting “significant important work” ahead.

South Korea welcomed the agreement, emphasizing hopes for safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Regional voices, including Kashmiri leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, underscored that “peace prevails over war,” praising mediation efforts by Pakistan, Türkiye, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the suspension of strikes on Iran for two weeks, after earlier threatening escalation if the strait was not reopened.
