Egypt’s Nabil Fahmy to Lead Organization

Arab League Picks New Chief

Arab foreign ministers have unanimously chosen former Egyptian diplomat Nabil Fahmy as the next secretary-general of the Arab League. His appointment will be formally validated at the upcoming Arab summit in Saudi Arabia, after which he will begin a five-year term in July.

Fahmy, 75, previously served as Egypt’s foreign minister (2013–2014) and will become the eighth Egyptian to head the Cairo-based body, succeeding Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Since its founding in 1945, the Arab League has had only one non-Egyptian leader—Tunisian Chedli Klibi in the 1980s.

In his first remarks, Fahmy called the role a “great responsibility,” stressing the need to address violations of international law and regional tensions threatening Arab sovereignty. His stance echoes the League’s long-standing positions on issues involving Iran and Israel.
