Nation mourns a leader who guided the country through a turbulent era

Algeria Pays Tribute to Former President Liamine Zeroual

Algeria is in mourning following the death of former president Liamine Zeroual, who passed away after an illness.

Current president Abdelmadjid Tebboune visited him at the military hospital in Algiers to pay his respects. The government has declared three days of national mourning in honor of his legacy.

Zeroual was a key figure in Algeria’s modern history. He first served in the armed struggle for independence within the FLN, which fought against French colonial rule. Years later, he became president during one of the country’s most difficult periods—the civil war of the 1990s.

Elected for a five-year term, Zeroual made the unusual decision to step down early in 1998 due to internal political disagreements. He was later succeeded by Abdelaziz Bouteflika after the 1999 elections.

Remembered as a leader who tried to stabilize the country during crisis, Zeroual leaves behind a significant legacy in Algeria’s political history.
