Held on April 16–17, the high-level meeting focused on validating strategic recommendations to boost joint military operations in the Sahel
On April 16 and 17, 2026, the Committee of Chiefs of Staff of the Confederation (CCEMC) met in Ouagadougou to take forward the operationalization of the AES Unified Force. The session aimed to validate key recommendations resulting from a prior technical experts’ meeting held between April 7 and 15 in the Burkinabè capital.
Bringing together senior military officials from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the discussions centered on strategic decisions designed to enhance coordination and efficiency in joint operations. According to Brigadier General Moussa Diallo, Chief of Staff of the Burkinabè Armed Forces, the expected outcomes are set to directly impact field performance and strengthen the command structure of the unified force.
The initiative seeks to provide the force with the necessary resources and operational capacity to effectively combat terrorism across the Sahel region. General Diallo also reiterated support for troops on the ground, while delivering a firm message that any threat to AES territory would face a strong and coordinated military response.
The conclusions of the meeting are expected to be submitted to the heads of state of the three member countries for final approval.
