Prosecutors alleged the shooting incident left Adwoa Safo with multiple gunshot injuries.
A Ghanaian Circuit Court has granted bail to nine persons accused of involvement in a shooting incident that left former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo with gunshot injuries.
The accused persons were each granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 ($44,728) with two justified sureties and are expected to reappear before the court on September 30, 2026.
Mrs Angela Attachie, the presiding judge, granted the bail application after hearing submissions from lawyers for the accused and the prosecution.
Ghana News Agency reports the accused are Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, Tamakloe Safo Jehosphat, Kwabena Safo, Benjamin Amoakua Sam, Badu Enock, Richard Ayittey, Gideon Safo, Nana Kwadwo Afriyie and Kwabena Safo Koomson.
Charge sheet
They have been charged with causing unlawful damage, use of offensive weapons, possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition offences, prohibition of vigilante groups and activities, and discharging firearms in a public place.
The prosecution alleged that Madam Adwoa Safo arrived at the entrance of her father’s home for a ceremony but was denied entry by the accused persons, who were allegedly armed with pump-action guns and pistols.
Prosecutors further alleged that an ensuing confrontation led to a shooting incident in which Madam Adwoa Safo sustained gunshot injuries to the left side of her face, the back of her head, her left ear and lower jaw.
The court heard that her Toyota Prado vehicle also bore visible gunshot marks, with its windscreen and door glasses shattered. She was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.
Weapons seized
Police are said to have disarmed the accused persons and retrieved six pump-action guns loaded with 42 cartridges and one expended cartridge.
The prosecution further alleged that a search of a Toyota Land Cruiser parked at Akofena's residence led to the recovery of two pistols loaded with 20 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a black bag, while another pistol loaded with 13 rounds was allegedly found on Tamakloe Safo Jehosphat.
During proceedings, Mr Kwame Gyan, counsel for the accused, urged the court to grant bail, arguing that the matter was a family dispute and that efforts were underway to resolve it.
"This matter is a family issue and efforts are being made to settle it amicably," he told the court.
The prosecution had opposed the bail application and requested that the accused persons be remanded, maintaining that investigations were still ongoing.
The case has been adjourned to September 30, 2026.
