Disaster strikes coltan-rich Rubaya area after heavy rains

Landslide at Congo Mining Site Kills 10, Dozens Missing

At least 10 people have died and dozens remain missing after a landslide hit a mining site in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local media reported Saturday.

The disaster occurred around 4 a.m. local time in the Rubaya mining area in Masisi Territory, located in North Kivu province, following heavy rainfall. According to Radio Okapi, at least a dozen bodies including six children had been recovered by midday.

Eyewitnesses said several homes near the mining site were completely buried by the landslide, while a number of injured victims were taken to nearby medical facilities. The collapse reportedly began near the shafts of the Gakombe mining site before sweeping down to areas where many artisanal miners were working.

Residents and miners have been using makeshift tools in desperate attempts to locate survivors and recover bodies still trapped under debris.

The tragedy comes only days after another disaster at the same site earlier this week that reportedly killed more than 200 people, according to government sources. In January, a separate incident in the region left over 400 people dead, local media said.

The mineral-rich mining zone known for deposits of coltan, cassiterite, gold, and tourmaline has been under the control of the M23 rebel group since 2024.
