Nigeria's First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged the country's leading musicians Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake to allocate part of their wealth toward helping the poor.
Nigeria's First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who previously served as the senator for Lagos Central from 2011 to 2023, has urged the country's leading musicians Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake to allocate part of their wealth toward helping the poor.
First Lady Oluremi made the appeal on Saturday, July 11, 2026, when she presided over the launch of a community food bank programme in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, located in Nigeria's north-central region.
She said: "I think it is high time we started helping those who need help in the country. I want to appeal to our young ones in the entertainment industry. I have mentioned it before, and I will use Akon, a music icon, who does a lot of great charity work. The Burna Boys of this world, Asake, all of them, Davido… We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money, not just… good cars are good, a Maybach is good, a Rolls-Royce is good, but still, you can still help. The burden on the government is huge, you can still help."
The first lady's sentiments went viral, with some online users in Nigeria backing her message, while others said that entertainers should enjoy the liberty to choose what to do with their money.
Comfortable income
Burna Boy's net worth is not publicly declared. However, certain platforms such as Celebrity Net Worth and Yahoo Entertainment, estimate his net worth to be above $22 million.
When asked about the accuracy of that figure in August 2023, the Afrobeats artiste told Complex magazine that the projection was "way off" the mark, without disclosing whether it was lower or higher than his actual net worth.
Burna Boy, however, says he earns a comfortable income from "music, sport, community, and culture."
Recently, a Dubai-based motor vehicle dealership said the musician had acquired a custom-built Bugatti Chiron for his birthday. Burna Boy turned 35 years old on July 2. The cost of his new vehicle is not publicly known, but reports in Nigeria suggest that it was acquired for at least $3 million.
'Stop watching my pockets'
Thirty-three-year-old Davido, on the other hand, is reported to be worth around $100 million. Again, this estimated figure cannot be independently verified, as no official wealth-tracking has been made on the Afro-pop musician's wealth.
In September 2024, he wrote on X: "Stop watching my pockets. You will never understand."
Davido's income largely comes from music royalties, concerts, brand endorsements, and merchandise sales.
Thirty-one-year-old Asake is another Nigerian artiste whose estimated net worth is in the millions of US dollars. Just like Burna Boy and Davido, the official projection of his wealth is not known, but reports suggest that his net worth could be on the upwards of $7 million.
Charity and philanthropy
While First Lady Oluremi has challenged the three leading musicians to channel part of their resources toward poverty alleviation, records show that Burna Boy, Davido, and Asake have taken part in various charity or philanthropy programmes.
For instance, Burna Boy has provided food donation to families in Nigeria's Rivers State, while Davido has provided support to orphanages across the country. Asake, on the other hand, has offered individual help to various Nigerians, including a hospitalised Nigerian police officer.
According to Burna Boy, he helps people who "really need it, and most of them are not on the internet."
