Washington cites terrorism, kidnappings, and unrest in updated advisory

US Warns Against Travel to Parts of Nigeria

The United States has urged Americans to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to growing concerns over terrorism, kidnappings, and civil unrest.

In a new travel advisory, the US State Department placed at least 23 Nigerian states in its highest-risk category: “Level 4 – Do Not Travel.” Officials said security conditions in those areas are unstable and unpredictable.

The US has also approved the departure of non-essential embassy staff and family members from its embassy in Abuja because of the worsening security situation.

According to the advisory, attacks may happen with little or no warning in places such as:

  • Markets

  • Hotels

  • Schools

  • Religious sites

  • Transportation hubs

The warning follows a rise in deadly violence across several parts of Nigeria, including attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province in the northeast. Other areas have also seen violence linked to armed bandits and communal clashes.

Nigerian officials have not yet formally responded, though in the past they have argued that such warnings can harm the country’s reputation and overlook security improvements in some regions.

The advisory may also affect Nigeria’s efforts to attract investors, tourists, and international business as the country works toward economic recovery.
