Attacks on journalists erode democracy and accountability
On World Press Freedom Day, UN rights chief Volker Türk warned that rising attacks on journalists worldwide are undermining democracy. At least 14 journalists have been killed this year, with few perpetrators brought to justice. Türk highlighted extreme risks in conflict zones such as Gaza, but also pointed to surveillance, legal pressure, and online abuse faced by reporters globally—issues that disproportionately affect women journalists. He urged governments to repeal restrictive laws, protect media workers, and ensure accountability, while calling on tech companies to address misinformation and harassment. Without stronger protections, he said, the flow of reliable information—and democracy itself is at risk.
