Istanbul becomes a key transit point as African nations respond to Middle East tensions.
Dozens of Ugandan nationals have been evacuated from Iran and transported through Istanbul after Türkiye granted transit visas to facilitate their safe return home.
Most of the evacuees were students who traveled by bus from Tehran to the Gürbulak border crossing before continuing to Istanbul for their onward journey to Kampala.
The evacuation was coordinated by Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the military, as regional tensions intensified following recent military strikes and retaliatory attacks across the Middle East.
Other African governments are also monitoring the situation closely, activating emergency protocols and organizing evacuations where possible.
Officials warn that ongoing instability and airspace restrictions could make further evacuations increasingly difficult.
