Uganda joins Türkiye in marking Atatürk Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day

The Turkish Embassy in Kampala held a ceremony as part of celebrations to mark Türkiye's May 19 Atatürk Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day.

Turkish Ambassador to Uganda Fatih Ak congratulated young people on the occasion, saying Mustafa Kemal Atatürk gifted the day to the youth.

"As we honour Atatürk's legacy on this day, which was gifted to our youth, who are the guarantee of our future, it is our duty to work with all our might to ensure that the younger generation is well prepared to preserve our national and spiritual values," he said.

"Our youth are the greatest guarantee of our country and the greatest asset of our nation. We must explain to them, in the best possible way, the importance of the struggles of the past," he added.

Important national holiday

"I commemorate our esteemed martyrs with mercy and respect, especially the founder of our Republic, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and I congratulate our nation and all our youth on the occasion of May 19 Atatürk Commemoration, Youth and Sports Day."

Among those in attendance were Murat Cetin, the country coordinator for Turkish aid and development agency TIKA; Turkish Airlines' Uganda Country Manager Ali Ozdemir; and Turkish Religious Attaché to Uganda Ramazan Pehlivanoğlu, among others.

Children and youth also took part in a lively painting activity that brought energy and colour to the event.

May 19 is one of Türkiye's most important national holidays. It commemorates Atatürk's arrival in Samsun on May 19, 1919, a moment regarded as the beginning of the war of independence following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. The date is officially observed as a national holiday dedicated to youth and sports.
