Experts highlight security, education, and diplomacy as pillars of a growing bilateral alliance
Scholars and diplomats convened at Istanbul University’s African Studies Application and Research Center (AUAM) to assess the evolving trajectory of Türkiye–Somalia relations during a high-level academic forum.
Held under the theme “Türkiye–Somalia Relations from Past to Present,” the event brought together leading figures, including Osman Bülent Zülfika, to explore the historical, diplomatic, military, and socioeconomic dimensions of the partnership.
Prominent academics such as Gökhan Kavak, Cihat Yaycı, Ahmet Kavas, and Aydın Özkan offered a multidimensional analysis of the strengthening ties between the two countries.
Participants emphasized that relations have evolved beyond traditional diplomacy into a more integrated and strategic framework. Türkiye’s support for Somalia’s security sector—particularly through training programs and institutional cooperation—was highlighted as a key driver of state capacity building.
The forum also underscored Türkiye’s sustained diplomatic presence in Mogadishu, enabling close coordination with Somali authorities in governance, development, and institutional reform—reflecting a long-term partnership approach.
Education and human capital development emerged as central pillars, with initiatives led by the Türkiye Maarif Foundation and academic opportunities in Türkiye contributing to the formation of a skilled Somali workforce.
Economic cooperation is also expanding, supported by interest in offshore energy projects and enhanced connectivity through direct flights between Mogadishu and Istanbul, facilitating trade, mobility, and humanitarian access.
At the regional level, Türkiye’s diplomatic engagement was highlighted through initiatives such as the Ankara Process, aimed at promoting dialogue between Somalia and Ethiopia and strengthening regional stability.
The forum also addressed broader regional challenges, including the ongoing crisis in Sudan, examining its political roots, humanitarian consequences, and possible pathways toward peace.
In closing, Prof. Ahmet Kavas emphasized Türkiye’s growing role in international mediation and the importance of sustained cooperation for long-term regional stability.
