The US president accuses Ottawa of imposing high tariffs on American agricultural products as the two countries remain locked in a trade dispute.

Trump criticises Canada over tariffs amid ongoing trade dispute

US President Donald Trump criticised Canada over tariffs on Sunday, renewing his attacks on Ottawa’s trade policies and relationship with Washington.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also accused Canada of imposing high tariffs on US agricultural products, saying American farmers had faced “massive amounts of Tariffs” for years.

The comments came amid an ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the US of using new tariffs to “hurt and divide” Canada, calling the measures “a miscalculation”.

Trade talks suspended

Carney pledged dollar-for-dollar retaliation beginning on September 8 and said Canada had suspended trade talks with Washington after the US made demands Ottawa could not accept.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, however, said Canada had walked away from a nearly completed agreement that would have further reduced tariffs on Canadian exports to the US market.

The dispute follows Canada’s decision to suspend trade negotiations with the US over what Ottawa described as unacceptable changes to Washington’s proposed terms.
