First formal state visit in nearly 40 years strengthens trade, defence, and diaspora ties

Bola Tinubu arrived in London on Tuesday for a state visit hosted by King Charles III, marking the first official visit between Nigeria and its former colonial power in nearly four decades.

Tinubu and Oluremi Tinubu will be welcomed by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. King Charles III will later meet Tinubu at Windsor Castle and host a state banquet.

The visit’s agenda includes:

  • Trade and economic ties: Bilateral trade reached £8.1 billion ($11 billion) in the year to September 2025, up 11.4% from 2024. Plans for major Nigerian port renovations backed by Britain are also expected to be discussed.

  • Defence cooperation: Following terrorist attacks in central Kwara State, the two countries aim to strengthen military collaboration.

  • Diaspora engagement: Tinubu will meet members of Nigeria’s large UK diaspora. Last week, King Charles hosted a reception for Nigerians at St James's Palace.

  • Church and community activities: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, a Christian pastor, will preach at Lambeth Palace and meet Church of England representatives.

The visit follows a strategic partnership agreement in November 2024, aiming to deepen economic, immigration, and security cooperation. Many Nigerian banks operate in the UK, and an economic cooperation deal signed in early 2024 under Britain’s previous Conservative government will also guide discussions.
