Recent Sudanese army airstrikes in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, inflicted heavy losses on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a regional government official said on Sunday.
Ahmed Ishaq Shanab, information minister and spokesperson for the Darfur regional government, said the latest strikes were “painful” for the RSF and caused heavy losses in personnel and equipment, according to Sudan’s state news agency SUNA.
On Friday, the Sudanese army said it carried out airstrikes targeting RSF command centres and positions in Nyala, which the paramilitary group uses as an administrative and military hub.
The army said the strikes killed dozens of RSF paramilitaries and destroyed several command centers.
Humanitarian crisis
Shanab said the RSF was “not safe” in Nyala or elsewhere and that the army would continue pursuing the group as far as Um Dafuq, near Sudan’s border with the Central African Republic.
He said military operations against the RSF were continuing and that new areas were coming under army control, without identifying them.
The Sudanese army and the paramilitary RSF have been fighting since April 2023 in a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis.
