South Africa Deploys Soldiers in Johannesburg to Tackle Crime

South African soldiers were deployed in Johannesburg on Wednesday to support police efforts in tackling gang violence and illegal mining, two of the country’s most pressing security issues.

Troops were spotted in the Riverlea suburb, marking the first major deployment since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced plans to involve the military in assisting law enforcement. In his recent address to the nation, Ramaphosa warned that organized crime represents a major threat to South Africa’s democracy and economic development.

Authorities have yet to disclose the scale or duration of the military operation.

South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime, with around 60 murders reported daily. Many of these incidents are linked to drug gang conflicts in Cape Town and violence associated with illegal mining activities in Gauteng province, where Johannesburg is located.

The deployment forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen security and restore stability in communities affected by organized criminal networks.
