South Africa condoles with Australia over Sydney shooting

South Africa extended its condolences and “heartfelt sympathy” to Australia following a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday that left 12 people dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry condemned the “senseless violence, which appears to have targeted the Jewish faithful while they were lighting candles for Hanukkah at Bondi Beach.”

“There is no justification for terrorism or attacks on any group based on faith or identity,” it said, expressing solidarity “with all those affected, especially the families and friends of the victims.”

South Africa added that it stands with Australia during this period of mourning and grief.

At least 12 people were killed and 29 others injured in a Sunday mass shooting incident at Bondi Beach in Sydney, according to Australian officials.
