Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti discuss regional stability and impact of the Middle East conflict.

Horn of Africa Leaders Meet in Djibouti for Security Talks

The leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti held trilateral talks in Djibouti on Wednesday to discuss regional security and the potential economic effects of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed examined how the war in the Middle East could affect the Horn of Africa, particularly in terms of security and economic stability.

Somalia’s Information Minister Daud Aweis said the discussions also covered counter-terrorism cooperation, Somalia’s democratic development, regional stability and ways to boost investment, mobility and infrastructure.

A statement from Djibouti added that the leaders reviewed issues related to peace, regional integration and shared strategic interests between the three countries.

The meeting comes as the US-Israeli war against Iran, which began on February 28, continues to escalate, contributing to rising civilian casualties and volatility in global oil prices.

Both Somalia and Djibouti have condemned Iranian attacks on Gulf countries.

Djibouti and Ethiopia also play key roles in the peacekeeping mission in Somalia, supporting operations against the extremist group Al-Shabaab.
