First drilling campaign signals economic hopes and strategic alignment

Somalia Enters Offshore Oil Era with Türkiye Partnership

Somalia has launched its first offshore oil drilling campaign, marking a pivotal moment in its pursuit of resource-driven economic growth and greater influence in regional energy dynamics.

According to Ali Omar, the initiative could significantly reshape the country’s economic outlook while deepening its strategic partnership with Türkiye as a long-term development partner.

The milestone operation began with the arrival of the Turkish drillship Cagri Bey in Somali waters, where it is set to begin drilling at the Curad-1 well. The vessel had departed earlier this year from Taşucu port in Mersin.

The project builds on agreements signed in 2024 between Somalia and Türkiye covering both offshore and onshore exploration. Prior to drilling, the Turkish seismic vessel Oruc Reis carried out surveys across multiple offshore blocks.

If successful, the initiative could position Somalia as an emerging energy player in the Horn of Africa, while reinforcing Türkiye’s strategic footprint in the region.
