Airstrikes near Baidoa carried out with international support
Somalia’s Defense Ministry says national forces, working with international partners, carried out airstrikes near Baidoa early Monday that killed 12 al-Shabab militants and wounded several others. The strikes targeted the Gasarta area on the city’s outskirts.
Officials described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to weaken al-Shabab’s capabilities and improve security across the country. Backed by the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission and other allies, Somali forces have stepped up their campaign against the group since July.
The UN Security Council renewed the mission’s mandate in December, extending authorization through the end of 2026. Al-Shabab has waged an insurgency for more than 16 years, frequently attacking security forces, officials, and civilians.
