Island nations strengthen cooperation while supporting Mauritius’ effort to regain control of the Chagos Archipelago.
Patrick Herminie, the president of Seychelles, has reaffirmed full support for Mauritius in its effort to restore sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago.
During talks with Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Herminie welcomed Mauritius’ promise that Seychellois Chagossians would receive equal compensation benefits under the agreement related to the islands.
Ramgoolam also invited Herminie as the guest of honour at Mauritius’ 58th Independence Day celebration on March 12, marking the country’s independence from United Kingdom colonial rule.
The announcement comes shortly after Seychelles suspended diplomatic ties with Maldives because the Maldivian government refused to recognise Mauritius’ sovereignty over the islands.
Both leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation between their countries. They signed a joint declaration to support sustainable development in the shared continental shelf area of the Mascarene Plateau and described it as a model for responsible ocean governance.
In addition, seven cooperation agreements were signed covering sectors such as arts and culture, agriculture, fisheries, training, and capacity building.
