Appeal challenges CAF ruling that awarded trophy to Morocco
Senegal has taken its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title dispute to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to overturn the decision that awarded the championship to Morocco.
The Swiss-based tribunal confirmed it has received an appeal from the Senegalese Football Federation against both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation.
The controversy stems from the January 18 final, where Senegal secured a 1–0 victory in extra time. CAF later ruled that Senegal had violated competition regulations after players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over a late penalty decision in favour of Morocco.
Following Morocco’s appeal, CAF declared Senegal to have forfeited the match, revising the result to a 3–0 win for the hosts.
Senegal is now asking CAS to annul the decision and reinstate them as champions. The court has pledged to handle the case swiftly, while ensuring a fair process for all parties involved.
The ruling is expected to have major implications for African football, as it will deliver the final and binding verdict in one of the tournament’s most contentious disputes.
