Scores dead after heavy rains batter India's Uttar Pradesh province

At least 56 people have been killed in rain- and storm-related incidents in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh since Friday, local media reported.The Press Trust of India (PTI), citing officials, reported that heavy downpours and strong winds have uprooted trees and electricity poles, inundated roads and villages, and damaged more than 1,000 houses and standing crops.Rescue teams have been conducting operations in waterlogged areas to evacuate stranded residents to safer locations, the state's relief department said.Several districts remain affected by flood-like conditions after the intense three-day spell of rainfall, which has disrupted daily life and damaged infrastructure.The weather system responsible for the heavy rainfall weakened from a depression into a well-marked low-pressure area on Sunday, bringing some respite from the downpours, officials said.Meanwhile, in neighbouring Nepal, floods and landslides have killed at least 14 people and left 11 others missing since Thursday, with authorities warning of possible flash floods in 49 of the country's 77 districts.
