Russia and North Korea Move Toward Deeper Military Ties

Russia’s defense minister Andrey Belousov met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang to discuss expanding military cooperation between their countries.

According to Russian officials, the two sides are planning to strengthen their partnership over the long term. They are preparing to sign a formal agreement that would guide military cooperation from 2027 to 2031, aiming to make their collaboration more structured and stable.

Belousov described relations between Russia and North Korea as being at an “unprecedentedly high level,” suggesting closer ties not only in defense but across multiple areas. He also thanked Kim for hosting the Russian delegation and highlighted the importance of ongoing diplomatic and military exchanges.

During the visit, the Russian delegation was invited to attend the opening of a memorial complex honoring Korean soldiers who served abroad. Belousov called participation in the event a “great honor,” emphasizing the symbolic importance of the visit.

The meeting reflects growing alignment between Moscow and Pyongyang, particularly in military and strategic cooperation.
