Republic of Congo holds presidential election, internet disruption reported

Internet access across the Republic of Congo was disrupted on Sunday as citizens voted in the presidential election, global watchdog NetBlocks reported.

Network data indicated a near-total nationwide disruption, similar to the three-day blackout during the March 2021 election. Polls opened at 6 am local time (0500 GMT) and will remain open until 6 pm (1700 GMT), with over 2.6 million registered voters aged 18 and above eligible to cast ballots.

Incumbent President Denis Sassou Nguesso is seeking a fifth consecutive term after winning elections in 2002, 2009, 2016, and 2021, when he secured more than 88% of the vote following 2015 constitutional changes that reset term limits and removed the presidential age cap.

He faces six challengers, including former lawmaker Mabio Mavoungou Zinga and veteran legislator Joseph Kignoumbi Kia Mboungou. A candidate with an absolute majority will be declared the winner; otherwise, a run-off between the top two candidates will be held.
